This is my maternal Grandfather , He went by Jones Gardner most all his life.
He attended Roanoke Business College, Roanoke, VA. and graduated in business.
My grandmother made all his white dress shirts, just as she did all the family clothes.

He owned and ran a store located in Roanoke, Va until the depression . It had to close due to customers being unable to pay their tabs and with no hope in sight he closed it. They then moved to Hillsville, VA to work the family farm with his father. A few years later he bought a 350 acre section of the family farm from his father that is now the homeplace, of which is still being lived in by family.

The farm consisted of 350 acres of farmland. They had a horse named _Thunder__ and all the younger children were raised there. The older girls were already working in Roanoke and stayed on when the store closed and he and the boys then moved to the farm.

It was hard on them during the depression; they lost 2 homes in Roanoke before they made the move. Farming was hard work but the boys were all helping until WWII started and each of them joined. Grandfather still held on to the farm and each of the boys returned. They had battle injuries but they kept working and helping. They each married over time and all still helped with the farm till grandfathers passing in 1950.

After his death, the farm was still farmed and harvest time every year all the families would come join in the events and field meals were served and grandchildren joined in the bailing , harvesting and chasing cows.

Info from daughter Mary Jane Gardner Taylor [my mother]
______________________
The farm and some of the original land, is still in the family and owned now by a cuzin. They completely remodeled the farm house and updated the barns. Orchards have been planted as well as a big garden. A wrap around porch has been added to the house and a huge kitchen for all the family when they visit.
Even now when we visit , the same feelings as when I was child returns. The love of the land , the place and a different time are all wrapped up into the present. Everyone should be so lucky. I am blessed with so many wonderful memories and images of a time past and now present.
