("The Griswold American" newspaper published in Griswold, Iowa dated July 3, 1895 on page 1)

Milton P. Black Dead.

The American is again called upon to record the death of another one of the early pioneers of this section. Milton P. Black, who died at his home a few miles northwest of Griswold early Tuesday morning, located in this vicinity in 1848. He was a typical pioneer. His home was always a haven and refuge to the weary pilgrim as he was traveling toward the setting sun.

When the . . . (unreadable copy) . . . country was in danger he offered his service and for three years he braved the determined foe on southern battle fields. [He attained the rank of sergeant during his service. He served in Co. B 10th Ia. Inf in the Civil War.]

A better citizen, a kinder friend, a more accommodating neighbor than M. P. Black would be hard to find, and while he had lived to a ripe old age his death will be mourned by everyone in this community. The deceased was born in December 1820. He has ten children living. The funeral services will be held in the M. E. church, this city, at 10 o'clock this morning, conducted by Rev. Varley, of Lewis, after which the remains will be laid to rest in the Flint cemetery.
