Mrs. Tabitha Pierson-Black Who Died the Forepart of Last Week Had Lived Here More Than 70 Years.

Mrs. Tabitha Black whose maiden name was Pierson . . . (two lines unreadable) . . . four miles northwest of town, Monday, July 1st, 1907, aged 75 years, 11 months and 15 days.

Early in life the family moved to Indiana and there, at the age of about 17 years, Mrs. Black was married to J. A. Lipp, who lived but a few years. One son, J. A. Lipp, of Wright township, was born to this union.

It was in the year 1855 or 1856 that the then Mrs. Lipp was married to M. P. Black and they at once went to housekeeping on the J. A. Gould farm, some three miles southwest of Griswold, and ever since Mrs. Black has made this community her home.

At the time the deceased was married to Mr. Black, she assumed the duties of motherhood to four small children, besides her own child, Mr. Black having been previously married and his wife having died, leaving them motherless. All four of these children are still living and revere this sainted one that has gone from them forever, as much as they could their own mother had she been spared to rear them to maturity. These children are Mrs. John Reibsomer, of Connersville, Indiana; Clinton Black, of Lewis; Ross Quick, of this place and J. R. Black, of Cotulla, Texas.

To this last union eight children were born, four of whom have preceded the mother to the other shore and four remain to mourn her death. They are Wm. Black, of Verdel, Nebraska; Leonard Black, of this place; Mrs. Lizzie Morgan, of Wichita, Kansas; and Mrs. Cora Younker, of Lane, Kansas.

In the pioneer days when neighbors were few and far apart, Mrs. Black never knew a night too dark or a day too stormy for her to administer to the needy when called upon. She was a noble woman and loved by everyone. In speaking of her religion we cannot say more than to reproduce a memorandum written by herself on April 14, 1898, and placed in her bible. That memorandum reads:

"Have been trying to serve our good Lord since I was twenty-eight years of age. Have been a member of the Methodist church for twenty six years and feel like pressing on to the mark of the high calling and feel that all is well with me. Give this to the minister called to preach my funeral."

The funeral services were held in the M. E. church in this city, Wednesday afternoon last conducted by Rev. J. F. Davis and was largely attended by the older residents of the community. Interment was held in the Flint cemetery.
