OBITUARY: "Alton Democrat Alton, Iowa July 29, 1938 "Math. Minten Dies Suddenly Sunday. HAD RESIDED NEAR ALTON FIFTY YEARS. FUNERAL SERVICES WEDNESDAY MORNING. (picture) Math. Minten, prominent Alton retired farmer, died suddenly at his home here Sunday from a heart attack. He had attended church as usual visiting with friends down town after services he appeared in his usual good health. His sudden passing was a great shock to his family and hundreds of friends in the community where he had lived for over fifty years.
Born in Fussville, Wis., on June 16th 1869, he had just reached his 69th year.
In October 1887 he came with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Minetn, eight brothers and one sister, to the Alton vicinity where the family invested in farm holdings. In 1893 he was married at Sublimity, Oregon, to Miss Lena Ghelen and brought his bride to the farm home southeast of Alton where they resided until seven years ago. At that time they retired from the farm and moved to Alton. Surviving are Mrs. Minten and seven children: Sylvia, Sylvester, Bernard, all of Alton, Mrs. Rose Mousel of Movill, Peter, Mrs. Hilary Konz (Olga), and Viola, all of Alton, Olivia, Mrs. Wm. Pottebaum, died three years ago; also surviving are one sister, Mrs. Margaret Hildesheim of Spokane, Wash.; and three brothers: John of Alton; Jake of Los Angeles; Frank of Milwaukee; and 27 grandchildren.
Member of a sterling family, Mr. Minten was one of the best farmers of the community respected for his integrity and judgement and affectionately regarded for his kindness and sunny outlook on life. During the past five weeks the family had enjoyed many gatherings and reunions marking the visit of Mr. and Mrs. Jake Minten of Los Angeles, who left for St. Paul the first of last week but returned to Alton at once on being notified of the death of their brother.
Among others here for the services Wednesday morning at St. Mary's church were cousins of the family: Mr. and Mrs. John Hennes, Mrs. Conrad Hennes, Mrs. Bernard Herder, all of Jordan, Minn.; four nieces, the Misses Esther, Mamie, Clara and Juliana Minten, all of St. Paul: Mr. and Mrs. Henry Oldenburg of Galena and many others, including numerous Granville, Remsen and Le Mars friends. Mrs. Chris. Minten and daughter Marie arrived for the services. Services Wednesday were in charge of the Very Rev. M. A. Schemel. Pallbearers were Peter Treinen of Le Mars. George Hansen, Mike Even. Mike Zenk, Martin Streff and Theo. Wagner."
