Her mother died soon after Hattie's birth, perhaps as a result of childbirth. Hattie moved west to Colorado, with older siblings Horatio and John Banning (21 years and 19 years her senior, respectively).
Hattie married John M. Ross, a native of Prince Edward Island, Canada on January 1, 1878 in Gilpin County, Colorado, where John owned several gold mines in the Russell Gulch area near Central City. They had 12 children, only four of whom lived to adulthood. John and Hattie retired to Golden, Colorado in 1908 after many of the mines' gold veins were exhausted.
After John's death in 1918, Hattie married again in 1922 to widower Lewis M. Hickox. However, that marriage ended in divorce, after which she became Mrs John Ross again. She died of heart disease in Golden in 1935, being 79 years of age.
