John Anderson Banning, son of John and Eliza Ann (Anderson) Banning was born in Ohio County, (West) Virginia and moved as an infant with his parents and older brother Horatio to Henry County, Iowa, where he was raised.

He and wife Susan Tonkinson went west to Colorado, where he designed railroads, roads, mines and ditches. They moved to Weld County to a 327-acre ranch where he raised cattle, horses and hogs.
