The funeral of Portia Elizabeth Mattingly, 88, of 702 S. Indianapolis St., Bloomington, a retired teacher and nurse/midwife, will be at 10 A.M. Wednesday at Beck Memorial Home, Bloomington. The Rev. Gail Bell will officiate. Burial will be in Park Hill Cemetery, Bloomington. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 P.M. today at the memorial home. Mrs. Mattingly died at 6:12 P.M. Sunday (Dec. 5, 1993) at St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington. She was born April 23, 1905, at Hardin, a daughter of Dr. Stephen and Mary "Dot" Carruthers Flatt. She married Marshall Eugene Mattingly on July 5, 1928, in Bloomington. He preceded her in death. Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Radcliff, Danvers; five sons, Robert and Joseph, both of 1008 Hovey Ave., Normal; Paul, R.R. 1, Stanford; Walter, R.R. 3, Bloomington; and Arthur, B15, Hilltop Mobile Homes, Bloomington; 24 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. One son, two brothers and a grandson preceded her in death. Mrs. Mattingly was a teacher for two years at Carrollton, where some of her pupils were former schoolmates. Before her marriage, she was a nurse at Michael Reese Hospital, Chicago, for two years. In Kentucky, she was a midwife, making use of her experience as a nurse.
