He was born April 8, 1920 in the town of Birnamwood, the son of the late Emil and Emma (Wetzel) Gast.
On January 28, 1942 John was united in marriage to Jeanette Lambrect in Wausau. She preceded him in death on March 29, 1979.
John was a U.S. Army Air Corps Veteran serving during World War II.
Survivors include five sons, John Gast, Jr., Durand, WI, Jay Gast, Prairie du Chien, WI; Scott Gast, Schofield, Matt Gast, Wausau and Ronald Gast, Durand; four daughters, Patricia Heier, West Chicago, IL, Diane (Robert) Braun, Athens, Connie Lee Gast, Chippewa Falls and Kay Thompson, Wausau; two brothers, Arthur Gast, Shawano and Herbert Gast, Layton, UT; four sisters, Carol (John) Wolf, Shawano, Frances (Arnold) Maas, Wisconsin Rapids, Elsie (William) Zerneke, Birnamwood and Ann (Irving) Keldsen, Centuria, WI; and seven grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, John was preceded in death by one son, John Gast, Jr. in infancy, two brothers, Fred Gast and August "Jake" Gast and three sisters, Alvina Bell, Harriet Durland and Lorraine Cooley.
Funeral services were held April 24, 1979 at Schmidt-Schulta Funeral Home, Birnamwood. The Rev. Alfred Abrahamson officiated. Interment was in Forest Cemetery, Birnamwood.
