Grace was born in Tennessee to William Henry Jones and Mary Ann Jones. She was the 7th child of her mother, who was a widow with 2 girls when she married Grace's father. Grace's mother died giving birth to her 8th child in 1907 when Grace was 2 years old. Grace was really born in 1905 and the date on her tombstone is incorrect because no one really knew how old she was. She was never truthful about her age.

She met her husband Waynard Edward Ickes while working at a VA hospital in TN. He had been gassed in France during WWI and stayed 8 months at the hospital. The day he got discharged, they got married by a justice of the peace and moved to Michigan, where they had a small farm and raised 9 children. They had an outhouse for a bathroom, a cow named Bessie, a hand pump in the kitchen to get water, and no electricity until about 1940. Lighting at night was by kerosene lamps. It's amazing what grandma could do to feed this large family on a small budget and without modern conveniences.

I am a granddaughter of Grace and I think all the grandkids can remember Grandma being in the kitchen wearing her apron and making homemade bread. She baked pies and bread for a local restaurant as well as for her family.
