Wayne was the son of George Washington Ickes and Harriet Lois Thurber. He married Grace Dortha Jones from Tennessee on Feb. 17, 1922. They met while he was recovering from Mustard Gas poisoning while stationed in France during WWI. He was in a VA hospital in TN where she was working. They got married when he was discharged from the hospital and moved to Michigan, which was where his family lived. They raised 9 children on a small farm without electricity until sometime in the mid 1940's when the electric company wired their house. My dad, Bruce (the 3rd born) could remember that day so clearly when they were able to turn on a light, and that day was when he decided to become an electrician.

I never met this grandfather of mine because he died before I was born, but from the stories told by others, he was a kind and gentle man. He never fully recovered from the Mustard Gas poisoning, and died in a VA hospital in Detroit from lung problems.
