Mary Lois got her nickname of Mayo when she was little and couldn't pronounce Mary Lois. She called herself Mayo, and it stuck to her all her life.

She was the daughter of Wayne Edward Ickes and Grace Dortha Jones and the oldest child of their 9 kids. Her parents had a small farm and grew much of the food they ate, and they had to pump their water by hand, had no electricity, and had an outhouse instead of a bathroom. She married big strapping Edward Gravitter on Oct 2, 1938, and they had 2 children: Sharon Gravitter Mott 1942-1992 and Rodney, who was always called "Buck" 1946-.

Mayo loved real estate and was a real estate agent for many years. She and Ed made their home in Decatur, Van Buren, MI. where she was living when she died at age 90.
