William Daniel Chesebro, aged 89, last surviving member of the John B. Reynolds Post of the GAR of Calumet County, died at his home in Gravesville Wednesday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock. Death was said to have been caused by the infirmities of old age.
Mr. Chesebro was born in Brothertown, Calumet County, December 16, 1846. He ran away from home at the age of 16 years to enlist with the Union forces as drummer boy in the Civil war. It is reported that he was rejected the first time because of his age, but was later accepted. He was in the ranks of the northern troops when they marched in General Sherman's drive to the sea. After the Civil war, he returned to Gravesville, where he lived until his death.
For many years Mr. Chesebro was postmaster in Gravesville, but that position was discontinued thirty years ago. He also operated the village saw mill with James Graves for a number of years. Mr. Chesebro was a machinist by trade.
Survivors are his widow and one son, Richard, the following grandchildren, Mrs. Beatrice Hoag, Manhattan, Calif.; Meade, Lyle, Dorothy, Claude, Wayne adn Virgil Chesebro, Los Angeles, Calif.; and great-grandchildren, Merlin Hoag, Manhattan, Calif.; Darlene Chesebro, Los Angeles, Calif. Four brothers, Lorenzo, Andrew, Theodore and Henry preceded him in death.
Military funeral services will be held Saturday at the Pfeffer Funeral Home with the American Legion in charge, interment will be made in the Union cemetery at Gravesville
