Edward completed his elementary school education in Ross Township. In his teen years he worked in the lumber camps in the Upper Ottowa Valley. When the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway started in 1874, Edward hired on and worked on the project into Northern Ontario.
He emigrated from Canada in June 1881 through Port Huron with his brothers James and Christopher to the Dakota Territory in the frontier town of Lisbon, North Dakota. Edward homesteaded farmland at Springer Township eight miles northwest of Lisbon.
On September 3, 1886, Edward applied for and became a naturalized citizen of the United States.
Edward married Catherine Madigan on October 4, 1887 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Lisbon, North Dakota. After they married, they farmed on the homestead in Springer Township until his death on March 14, 1906 of Typhoid.
He is survived by his wife Catherine; children, Christopher, John, Mary Edythe, Caroline, and Daniel Roach of Lisbon.
