Obituary: Mrs. Van Zante
Loved Hanford Matron Succumbs
Mrs. Bessie Van Zante, wife of former-Superior Judge K. Van Zante, passed away at the family home 421 Kaweah street, at 1:15 a.m. Friday, of a sudden recurrence of an illness she suffered several weeks ago which took the form of a stroke. She had been apparently in normal health until Thursday afternoon when symptoms indicated a return of the malady and later was retired and passed away in her sleep some hours later.
Mrs. Van Zante was a native of Iowa, of Netherlands parentage, and passed her sixty-fifth birthday anniversary on last November 23. She came to California in 1907, residing first in San Francisco and later they moved to Corcoran, in 1915. In 1919 she and her husband moved to Hanford, making this city their home since then.
During her residence here Mrs. Van Zante has been an active worker in the Christian Science Church, and had a wide acquaintance of warm friends and neighbors.
Judge and Mrs. Van Zante were virtually parents to Flight Officer Donald H. Bootsma, of the Royal Canadian Air Force, reported missing in action more that two years ago, with no definite word since. He was Mrs. Van Zante's nephew, and lived with them from the time he was seven years of age until he entered the Canadian Air Force, his relationship being almost equivalent to sonship.
Surviving are her husband, K. Van Zante and two sisters, Miss Dora J. Bootsma, of Pella, Iowa, and Mrs. Helene Van Gorp, of New Sharon, Iowa.
Funeral services under the direction of the Church of Christ, Scientist, with Dr. Carl H. Duffy, reader, will be held at the chapel of the Peoples' Undertaking Parlors, at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 30, and burial will follow in Hanford Cemetery.
