Capt. Joseph Devol, as his immediate family surname is written in early New England records, was b. circa 1675 possibly at Newport, Rhode Island, s. of Jonathan Devol and Hannah Audley. He d. before Nov. 14, 1726 at Dartmouth, Mass.

In the Dartmouth, Mass. records where Joseph resided, the surname is recorded variously as Daval, Davel, Daviel, Davil, Deval, Devel, Devil, Devill, Devoll, Divel, and Divol. In addition, the old English writing style wrote the letter "u" as if a "v" and the letter "v" as if the letter "u." Further, most early New England settlers came from diverse regions of old England with diverse regional accents. Scribes who may not have been intimately familiar with a family, often wrote surnames phonetically. The surname Devol and its variations could be phonetically sounded as if resembling the name "Devil," which would obviously create problems in religion dominated early New England. In several branches of Joseph's descendant family his surname became "Deuel" and "Duel."

Joseph was a member of the Dartmouth Meeting of the Society of Friends, or Quakers. He m., purportedly on July 30, 1695, Mary Soule, dau. of George Soule, Jr. and his wife Deborah, b. circa 1673 prob. at Dartmouth, Mass. She d. after June 17, 1729. They had seven known children b. at Dartmouth:
