This memorial originally appeared on Find A Grave ("bio by Find A Grave") with the following information:

Name: Jonathan P. Davol

Place of birth: Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts

Then the following info was received:

1. Jonathan had no middle initial for any supposed middle name. Middle names did not begin to appear in English North America until shortly before the year 1800.

2. If Jonathan was born in America as this memorial alleges in 1639, it certainly was not at Dartmouth in the Plymouth Colony. Dartmouth did not exist as a named place until circa 1660.

3. That the family name was Davol is a whole other fabrication. If his father William was the William, son of Thomas, baptized 4 June 1615 at Spalding, Lincolnshire, England, his baptized surname in that parish record is Devell, probably a corrupted misinterpretation of the actual written surname of "Deuell."

Regards,

Don Blauvelt, a descendant of Jonathan's son Joseph and the latter's wife Mary Soule.
