Joseph G. Paulus, 78, Chetek, formerly of Superior, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, at Barron Memorial Medical Center. He was born Nov. 17, 1919, in Superior, to Harry and Alice (Meteraud) Paulus and was employed for many years by the Chicago Northwestern Railroad as an engineer.

Paulus moved to Chetek in July 1990 from Superior. He and the former Theresa Hudacek were married Sept. 27, 1941, in Superior. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of a VFW Post in South Range. He enjoyed visiting at the Chetek VFW, pontooning, fishing, working in his yard and gardening, and had been a hunter.

In addition to his wife, Theresa, of Chetek, he is survived by seven children, Joseph E. Paulus, Manitowoc, Michael Paulus, Eau Claire, Elizabeth (Roger) Ogren, Hillsdale, JoLynn Gotelaere of Connecticut, Steven Paulus of St. Paul, Donna (Tony) Pauley, Denver, Colo., and Gary (Jodanna) Paulus of Superior; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, David (Mary) Paulus of Superior; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Gloria and Shirley, and three brothers, Dick, Jim and Jerry.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday at Burnham-Ours Funeral Home in Chetek, where a rosary service will be at 7:30 p.m. Visitation resumes Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral Mass in St. Boniface Catholic Church, Chetek. Fr. Gerard Willger will officiate with interment to be in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Chetek. Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery.
