Violet Azell Ward was born August 24, 1925, in Rose, Oklahoma, to Andy and Rettie (Gore) Monk. She passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2008, in Lawton, Oklahoma, at the age of 83 years and 1 month.
Azell grew up working hard on neighboring farms with her family. She was the oldest of eight children and the only girl. On March 19, 1945, in Dickens, Texas, Violet Azell Monk and Floyd Ward were united in marriage. They had three wonderful children and enjoyed many years together before Floyd's death October 30, 1988.

The Ward family moved from Rose to Roosevelt, Oklahoma, in 1964. After moving to Roosevelt, she continued to work on farms in the area and later worked on an egg farm in Warren, Oklahoma, in the early 1960's. She started cleaning houses for many families in the area and was also a substitute mail carrier during the 1980's. She was active in the Senior Citizens where she volunteered to cook for many community functions. Azell was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Roosevelt.

She is survived by: one son: Andy "Sonny" Ward and wife Carol of Pryor, Oklahoma; two daughters: Faye Greear and husband Jerry of Mountain Park, Oklahoma and Janice Long and husband Roy of Yukon, Oklahoma; one brother: Marvin "Jerry" Monk and wife Vivian of Locust Grove, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Many friends and church family who loved her dearly also survive her. Azell was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; six brothers: Carl, Jack, Carmon, Calvin, Ira, and Earl Monk; and one great-grandson: Christopher Lee Greear.

Funeral services were held 2:00 P.M., Monday, September 29, 2008, at the Little Rock Free Will Baptist Church. Reverend Rick Condit and Tim Tutten officiated. Interment followed at Elm Grove Cemetery near Rose, Oklahoma. Services were entrusted to the Locust Grove Funeral Home.
