US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II

Leonard Sokol enlisted in the Marine Corps 5 March, 1942 from Washington, DC. Recruited into a Marine Corps commissioning program titled "V-12" which allowed him to attend the College of William and Mary at Williamsburg, Virginia in inactive enlisted status as a Private First Class and carried on the rolls of the Platoon Leaders Unit, Severn and Potomac Reserve District, MB Navy Yard, Washington DC.

August, 1943 called to active duty and completed recruit training in the 8th Recruit Training Battalion, MB Parris Island, SC. 8 October, 1944 assigned to K Company, 39th Candidates Class, Marine Corps Schools, MCB Quantico, VA. Commissioned a Marine Corps 2nd Lieutenant and assigned Reserve Officers Class (ROC), MCS, MCB Quantio, VA. Trained and designated an Infantry Officer (MOS 1542).

April, 1944 assigned to E Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division, MCB Camp Pendleton, CA. 19 September, 1944 embarked the USAT Etolin at San Diego for movement overseas. 24 September, 1944 arrived at Hilo, Hawaii based at Camp Tarawa near Kamuela.

7 January, 1945 embarked the USS Talladega (APA-208) at Hilo, Hawaii. 13-17 January, 1945 landing rehearsals at Maui. 17 January, 1945 embarked the USS Missoula (APA-211) at Lahaina Roads, Maui. 23-27 January, 1945 at Pearl Harbor. 5-7 February, 1945 at Eniwetok, Marshalls. 11 February, 1945 embarked LST-481 at Saipan. 13, February, 1945 landing rehearsal at Tinian. 16 February, 1945 left the Marianas.

19 February, 1945 landed Green Beach Iwo Jima D-Day and participated in combat operations until Killed in Action 3 March, 1945.

Next of Kin: Parents, Mr Henry P and Mrs Josephine Sokol, 1813 Monroe Street North East, Washinton, DC.

Initially buried in the 5th Marine Division Cemetery on Iwo Jima.

20 April, 1948 permanent burial in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
