John won the rating of sharpshooter in 1912 and retained the title throughout his military career. His obituary states that from 29 March 1916 until 5 Feb. 1917, he was with the punitive expedition that engaged the forces of Pancho Villa in Juarez, Mexico and later in Zaragosa, Mexico. John's Army Compensation File indicates he did not serve overseas. Other documentation shows he served two years in foreign service which would likely be his time in Mexico.

He served with the following troops:

Troop B, 13th Reg. Cavalry (20 Sept 1905-5 Oct 1911)
Troop E, 6th Reg. Cavalry (15 Nov 1911 -14 Nov 1914)
5th Reg. Cavalry (12 Dec. 1914- 31 Oct. 1933)

His Army Compensation File shows he was Honorably Discharged on 31 Oct 1933 at Fort Clark (Texas) with the rank of Master Sgt. "Throughout his entire service," said a General Order issued Oct. 27, 1933 over the signature of Colonel Scales and Captain Lloyd Stafford of the 5th Cavalry at Fort Clark, Texas, "Master Sergeant Nitterhouse's loyalty, integrity and capable performance of duty brought commendation from all with whom he came in contact. His character of service may well be emulated by the young soldier of today. As an example of steady application to duty, loyalty and good service, he is rewarded with honorable retirement".

John married Elizabeth Low in 1919. She passed in 1926 and is buried at Fort Sam Houston in Texas. They had no children.

According to John's Army Compensation File of 1934, he was married to a Marie Woodward and she was living in San Antonio, Texas. They also had no children. Records show they married in 1932.
