U.S. General Dies Monday In Capital

Maj. Gen. Joseph Mehaffey, 73, retired U.S. Army officer, died in Washington, D.C., Monday.

A former Lima resident, he was a graduate of West Point Military Academy and served in the U.S. Corps of Engineers. After graduation, he was chief engineer for the Alaskan trails and highways.

During World War II, he was governor of the Panama Canal Zone. He was also chief engineer for construction of the Arlington Bridge in Washington.

After his retirement, he was a consulting engineer with Koppers Industries of Pittsburgh, Pa. At the time of his death, he was associated with the World Bank in Washington.

He was the son of William R. and Mary Mehaffey. Mr. Mehaffey was the original owner of the Times-Democrat newspaper in Lima.

Maj. Gen. Mehaffey was the grandson of former U.S. Sen. Robert Mehaffey, who was the founder of the Metropolitan Bank in Lima.

Surviving are two cousins, Mrs. Lester Thomas, 1533 Shawnee Rd., and Miss Alice Hill, Washington, D.C.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery.
