Former Lima Editor And Civic Leader Succumbs In Asheville, N.C.

William Robert Mehaffey, 81, former editor of The Allen County Democrat and later editor of The Lima Times-Democrat, died at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday in Asheville, N.C., according to advices received by relatives. Death was attributed to infirmities of age.

The deceased was born and reared in Lafayette and obtained his early education in the schools of that village. He later was graduated from Kenyon college, after which he took up residence in Lima and became an outstanding civic leader.

Mehaffey was the oldest child of Robert and Mary Eleanor Richardson Mehaffey. He was twice married, his first wife being Mary Brooks Stahl who died March 18, 1899. To this union were born four children. His second wife was Mary E. Mount Mehaffey, who died January of this year. There was one daughter, Eleanor Cowles Mehaffey who died in early childhood and one son, William Kenneth Mehaffey, who died in 1906. The living survivors are two sons, Robert Chisholm Mehaffey, of Chicago and Lt. Col. Joseph Cowles Mehaffey, of Washington, D.C.

The body will be accompanied from Asheville Thursday and will arrive in Lima at noon Friday.

The Rev. J. S. Elder, pastor of St. Rose Catholic church will conduct brief services at the grave in Woodlawn cemetery. Davis Miller and Son will be in charge of the burial.
