John Barth Plymouth Post January 12, 1899

Kiel—John Barth, one of the most popular residents of town Schleswig, lost his life Friday noon in a tumble in front to Zillmann's Store in Rockville. Barth had stopped by Stange a farmer in the neighborhood of Rockville who is Treasurer of Schleswig, and paid his taxes. On his was home he saw Schreiner's Beer wagon in front of the Store and Saloon and hurried over there in order to ride home with it. Peter Klauck, the beer delivery man was willing to take him along to his farm which lies between Rockville and Kiel, but Barth had a small errand to do by Henry Stoll which is right near the Zillmann place. Barth had hardly gotten on the street when he stumbled and broke his neck. The deceased was Chairman of Town Schleswig for 28 years and represented out District in Legislation once. He reached the age of 72 years and 9 days.

JOHN BARTH 1899

In 1853 he married Katharina Burkhardt who died on August 24, 1897. The couple immigrated to America one day after their wedding, and settled at first in Buffalo, NY. A year later they traveled westward to Town Neun-Revier. From there they came to Town Schleswig in 1855, and settled on a piece of virgin forest. This virgin forest, he turned into a farm with the help of his wife and his meantime growing children, which he continued to work until his death.
The marriage produced nine children of whom four preceded their parents in death. Five children, three sons and two daughters survive, and mourn the death of their father.
The deceased was held in high esteem by his fellow citizens, due to circumstances of his life. At first he was the treasurer for town Schleswig and a member of the town board and for about 25 years president of the town board, and a three terms as the town assessor. The last 20 years he had been director of the school board, and in the fall of 1869 he became a member of Wisconsin State legislation. As school board director one of his jobs was to order firewood for the school which he was intending to accomplish, when he fell on the icey path, hitting his head, and only minutes later died.

Afterwards the Men's choir sang another song. The funeral procession from the house to the grave was the largest that took place in the area.
