Winnie May Whittenburg was born in the Stinson community of Lawrence County, Missouri. She attended Stinson School through the eighth grade, then continued to live with her parents until she married Dale Carpenter. Dale was a farmer and for most of their married life they lived about seven miles southeast of Miller, Missouri. For several years Winnie was a correspondent for the local newspapers. The Carpenters had no children of their own, so when Winnie's younger sister, Pearl Jane (Whittenburg) Preston, died in 1928 leaving a 15 month old daughter, Winnie and Dale adopted her. She grew up as Fama Jean Preston, keeping her fathers surname. After Dale's death, Winnie remarried to Emery Seaton. Her death came in the Aurora Community Hospital in Aurora, Missouri. Fama Jean married Truman McDonnell Ross in 1944. At the present time they live near Joplin, Missouri and are the parents of three children: Ethel Rosezell, Janice Marie, and Donnell Gene. Fama Jean was employed at the shoe factory in Sarcoxie, Missouri for several years until a heart condition forced an early retirement.
