He graduated from Luray High School and served with the U.S. Army from 1962-64.
He was the owner and operator of Gail Gochenour Electrical of New Market.
Gail had lived in New Market since 1964 and was a well-known member of the community.
He was a member of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church west of New Market, the Hassler-Sutphin American Legion Post #166 of New Market and the Fraternal Order of Eagles of New Market.
On September 21, 1974 he married the former Mary Knupp, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Kristi Lynn Gochenour of Williamsburg, Karen Faith Emrich of New Market and Robert Wayne Knupp of New Market;
Five brothers, Ashby Gochenour, Leroy Gochenour and Ikey Gochenour, all of Luray, Hunter Gochenour of Harrisonburg and Dwight "Whitey" Gochenour of Williamsburg;
Four sisters, Charlotte Higgins, Goldie Arey and Frances Seekford, all of Luray, and Nancy Ann Tusing of Woodstock;
Nine grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Richard Lee Knupp, on Sept. 22, 2007.
The Rev. Scott J. Paradise will conduct a funeral service at 3:00 p.m. Thursday from Reformation Lutheran Church, Congress St., in New Market.
Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion Lutheran Cemetery with members of the American Legion folding and presenting the flag. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m.
Wednesday at the Theis Funeral Chapel in New Market, where friends may call after 2 p.m. Tuesday. Friends may also call at the Gochenour residence.
