Memorial Services Womens' Foreign Missionary Society.
Mrs. Anna M. Harlan was an earnest, faithful member of the W.F.M. Society, since its organization in this place. The
Society at its last session devoted the time to exercises in her memory. The lateness of holding these services, was on account of inclement weather. The meeting was opened with appropriate Scripture reading, prayer and song "Shall We Gather at the River." Appropriate selections were given at roll call. Mrs. Smith read a poem, written for the Society by Rev. J.C. Reed:
United by congenial ties,
We organized a mission band
To take the Gospel's glorious prize
And send it forth to every land.
Our suffering sisters of the East
Send up the Macedonian cry.
They long to share the Gospel feast,
So rich and bounteous in supply.
Ye wives of Oriental lands,
Ye daughters of the far off East,
Your names are written on Christ's hands.
You are invited to the feast.
Delightful work! the news to spread,
That Jesus has redeemed our race,
For since he's risen from the dead,
There is no limit to his grace.
We train the Oriental vine,
By widow's mites, and fervent prayer,
Around God's altar to entwine---
Diffusing fragrance on the air.
But hush! one worker is no more;
Chant softly then the low refrain,
The missing link which we deplore
In Heaven will make the perfect chain.
The following poem was read by the Secretary, Mrs. M.A. Keeney: Dead.
How calmly she sleeps,
How peaceful, how fair,
No sign of distress,
Or sorrow, or care.
The Angel of Death,
In giving release,
Kissed softly the brow,
Left impress of "peace."
For greeting the soul
God's angels of love,
Spread o'er it their wings,
And guided above.
To fountains of life,
Whose clear clear flowing rill,
A land of delights,
With beauty doth fill.
A land where the homes
Are mansions e'er bright,
Where day's eternal,
For God is their light.
Where cometh no suffering
From sin's withering blight,
Where purity reigneth
And giveth delight.
Oh! peaceful sleeper,
We would not molest
Nor break the calm of
So happy a rest.
The report of Committee on Resolutions was received and resolutions adopted: WHEREAS, The Heavenly Father has in his infinite wisdom, removed from our midst, our beloved co-laborer, Sister Anna M. Harlan, RESOLVED, That we will ever hold in pleasant remembrance, her gentleness, cheerfulness, and ready willingness to do what she could to advance the interest of Christ's kingdom both at home and abroad. RESOLVED, That her memory shall be to us an incentive to greater zeal and usefulness in the cause we represent. RESOLVED, That in deep sympathy with the bereaved, we commend them to Him, who can overrule even such great sorrows, for the good of his children. RESOLVED, That these resolutions be placed on our records and a copy sent the family of the deceased. Com. Mrs. J.C. Reed, Mrs. O.H. Smith, and Mrs. M.A. Keeney.
Each member present then spoke a few words in memory of the departed, each speaking of the impressions left by her life; one, of her sweet spirit; another, her earnestness; others, her faith, zeal and many christian graces, all united in a life, that might well be imitated. Truly, though dead she yet speaketh.
A note of thanks to the Society for kindness shown, from Mr. C. Harlan, was read, and the exercises closed with the song, "Sweet By and By."
