She was born Aug. 6, 1920, in Brinkley, Ark., daughter of the Rev. Allen Britton and May Lawrence Cooper. She married Audley A. Brown, who preceded her in death.
Brown had lived in Charleston since 1933, where she was a member of First Baptist Church. She attended Ouachita Baptist University and returned to Charleston where she taught music in Mississippi County rural schools. She taught piano and organ to children and adults throughout the area and was organist for the United Methodist Church 12 years.
She was the founder of Mississippi County Historical Society and a charter member of the Junior Study Club. She published a book tracing her ancestors to the pre-Revolutionary War era. She served on the Charleston Board of Education, had served as secretary for the Mississippi County Draft Board and was city clerk of Charleston 17 years until retiring in 1991.
She had been an active member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Katherine Boone Music Club and Charleston Business and Professional Women's Club.
Survivors include three daughters, Susan Bandy of St. Louis, Betty Warford and Catherine Bird of Ponte Vedra; a brother, Dr. James Cooper of Charleston; five sisters, Julia Warren and Betty Hearnes of Charleston, Dr. Jennie Cooper and Jane Stacy of Cape Girardeau, Rose Marie Jordan of Greer, S.C.; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by a brother.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at First Baptist Church in Charleston.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Revs. Tim Vowels and Michael Brewer officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery.
