MARTINSVILLE DAILY BULLETIN, Thur., Oct. 2, 1941. Dr. Jesse Martin Shackelford died at his home on Church Street this morning. The son of the late William George and Pattie Martha Shackelford, he was born and reared in the Irisburg community. He attended the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and the U. of Maryland School of Medicine. He started one of the first hospitals in Martinsville, assisting in the founding of the Hariston Memorial Hospital about 1919. When it was destroyed by fire, he opened the hospital on Church Street which bears his name. He was assisted in the conduct of this hospital by his son, Dr. John A. Shackelford. Burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bertha B. Shackelford; one son, Dr. John A. Shackelford; two sisters, Mesdames James Meadows of Lynchburg and Mrs. James R. Richardson of Irisburg. Also, four granddaughters remain: Misses Margaret, Frances, Blanche Harrison and Mary Williamson Shackelford.
