Steven Lorentz was born on August 20, 1870 at Carrick, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada- the son of Anthony and Mary Ann Braun Lorentz. He came to the United States with his family in 1880. The family settled first at Alaska in Kent County, Michigan, and then later moved to Bay Shore in Charlevoix County, Michigan. Not long after this move, Steven moved to Elmira, Otsego County, Michigan, where he took up residence in the Village. On May 25, 1890, he married Miss. Helen Louella Starks, the daughter of Aaron and Mary E. Parsons Starks. The couple later purchased a farm just outside of the Village of Elmira where Steven remained for the remainder of his life. Steven and Helen L. Starks Lorentz had five children: Mary Eliza Lorentz; Roscoe Lorentz; Frank Lorentz; a child that died at birth; and Flossie May Lorentz. Steven died on his farm on April 16, 1944. He was buried in Maple Hill Cemetery on April 19, 1944. It appears that no obituary or notice of death appeared in any of the local newspapers at that time.
