Edward J. "Bill" Fortney, Jr. died Wednesday, December 31, 2008, at the York Hospital. He was the husband of Joanne G. (Stine) Fortney. They were married 58 years. Bill was born April 29, 1925, in York, a son of the late Lillian A. (Arnold) and Edward J. Fortney, Sr. He had worked as a carpenter for various contractors in the York area and retired after 20 years of service with the maintenance department at the York Hospital. He was a WWII Army veteran, having served in the European Theater. He was a life member of Hellam VFW Post and Eastern Paralyzed Veterans. There will be no viewing. Following cremation, a graveside service will be held at a later date at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by a son, Chris E. Fortney, husband of Debbie of York; a grandson, Jeremy Weigel, husband of Tammi of Dacula, Ga.; two great-granddaughters, Courtney Weigel and Alexis Weigel, both of Dacula, Ga.; and two brothers, Barry Fortney, husband of Mary of York, and Kenneth Fortney of York. He was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Fortney; and a sister, Janet Fortney. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to SPCA of York County, 3159 Susquehanna Trail North, York, PA 17406; or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Arrangements are being handled by the John W. Keffer Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 902 Mt. Rose Ave., York.
