The son of David R and Margaret (Dunham) Diffenderffer. His father was born in New Holland, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was educated at Franklin-Marshall College. After graduation he was appointed the US Consul to Mexico by President James Buchanan. After completing that assignment, he return to Pennsylvania for only a short time before heading to Lebanon, Missouri. He was well thought of and well liked. He continued his banking endeavors in Lebanon until his death.
