Josephus "Cleef" Palmer was born on January 25, 1854 in Frederick County a son of John and Rosanna Longman Palmer and was the husband of Manzella Virginia Rice Palmer who survives him.

Josephus died at home on Church Hill from his battle with cancer, he was 77 years 5 months and 7 days of age.

In addition to his wife he is survived by seven daughters, Miss Tobitha Virginia Palmer, near Wolfsville; Elizabeth Masude "Lizzie" Blickenstaff and husband, Charles Funk, Hagerstown; Hattie Edith Dusing and husband Jacob Melvin, Pleasant Walk; Lelia Catherine Michael and husband Charles Solomon, near Myersville; Annie Ray Forrest and husband Charles Leroy, near Myersville; Carrie May Easterday and husband Alvey Josiah, near Wolfsville and Mary Rosanna Schroyer and husband, Jacob Howard and predeceased by one daughter that died befor maturity, Bertha F. Palmer and one son Irving Charles Palmer and a 33 grandchildren and 28 greatgrandchildren.

He is also survived by four brothers, John "Carlton" Palmer, Church Hill; Charles Palmer and "Samuel" Palmer both of Dayton, Ohio and Elmer Palmer, Millerton, Ohio and three sisters, Miss Emma Palmer, Minnie Hoffman, both of Middletown and Eleanor B. Sarson, Boonesboro and a number of nieces and nephews and predeceased by one sister, Cordelia Palmer.

Funeral held at St. John's Church, Church Hill with the Rev.Henry Kraft officiating and internment made in the church cemeteryby Bittle Brothers, funeral directors, Myersville.

One of his brothers name was Martin, Samuel or Elmer.
