BREVITIES---

"ALEXANDER STEWART died at the home of his daughter-in-law, about three miles east of Medford, Wednesday, May 12, aged 88 years and 10 months. The remains were laid away in the Jacksonville cemetery, Thursday, May 13, at which place brief services were held. Deceased was born in Ireland, July 12, 1808, but spent most of his life in this country. He came to Southern Oregon 26 years ago, and made his home with his son and family."

*Note - The headstone of Alexander lists his year of birth as 1809. The obituary states 1808, as do other sources of reference for his birth. The year of birth is most likely incorrect on his stone, as occasionally happens.

Alexander shares a headstone with his daughter Elizabeth Stewart Culbertson, both of whom were widowed at the time of their deaths.

According to the 1850 Census for Prairie Township, Chariton County, Missouri, enumerated August 1850, Alexander was married to Rebecca, also born in Ireland, with whom he had the following children:

ALEXANDER STEWART was the son of John Stewart and his wife Isabelle Vance Stewart. His father died in Ireland, and his mother came to America.

"Hon. J. H. Stewart, a prominent fruit grower of Adams County, Illinois, has been in the valley for several days, and may locate, as the country seems to suit him. He is a nephew of ALEX STEWART of Medford precinct."

From the notes in the obituary of Alexander Stewart, he arrived in Medford area about 1871. His nephew Joseph Howard Stewart, the prominent orchardist in the Rogue River Valley of Oregon, relocated from Payson, Adams Co., IL to Medford in 1884, 21 years after his uncle Alexander made his home in Oregon, in 1871.
