Joseph and Ida (Arens) Promes
Joseph Promes was born August 25, 1901 in Wynot, the son of Henry and Mary (Reuter) Promes. He married Ida Arens, May 1, 1921 at SS. Philip and James church. He died June 22, 1963. He farmed southwest of St. James many years. He was elected County Commissioner in 1939 and served until 1962.
His wife, Ida, was born June 9, 1901 in Wynot and was the daughter of Anton and Anna Arens. She lived in the Wynot area until moving into Wynot in 1963. She was a housekeeper for Rev. Thomas De Backer, Rev. Robert Eimers and Rev. Wayne Schlautman.
In 1941 while Joe was County Commissioner, the wage scale for laborers employed by the county was as follows: motor patrolman 40 cents an hour, man labor 25 cents an hour, Man and team 40 cents, extra horses 7 1/2 cents, bridge foreman 35 cents, bridge labor 25 cents, road dragging per mile traveled 25 cents, car and grader operators 40 cents.
They were the parents of eight children: Mildred (Mrs. Irwin Koch), Lucille (Mrs. Julius Arens), Elmer (Jerome), Raynold, Ervin, Gerald, Lenora and MaryAnn. Lucille, Raynold, Lenora and MaryAnn are deceased.
