"Our Country is in Mourning, For a Soldier Died Today."

Howard D. Anderson, age 86, of Pickford, Michigan died Monday, August 17, 2009 at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

He was born May 16, 1923 in Pickford, Michigan, the son of Alexander S. Anderson and Maude Ellen (Stevenson) Anderson. Howard grew up in Pickford and graduated from Pickford High School in 1942.

On March 18, 1943, he began his service to his country in the United States Army. Howard served with the 90th Infantry Division during World War II and marched from Normandy to Czechoslovakia while active in five major campaigns which include Utah Beach in Normandy, The Falaise Gap in Northern France, Ardennes, Rineland, and Central Europe. During his service he earned a Bronze Star Medal for taking out a German machine gun nest. World War II made a tremendous impact on him and his favorite quote, "There is no future without learning from the past" told it all. Howard's love for his country and fellow soldier was a favorite subject of his storytelling.

After the war Howard returned to Pickford and married Elizabeth "Betty" Mae Leach (daughter of Marie McLaughlin and Hugh A. Leach) on June 26, 1946 at the Pickford Methodist Church. Howard learned the electrical trade while working for Frank Clegg and then owned and operated Howard Anderson Electric working as an electrical contractor until the mid 1980's. Howard was a member of the Ninetieth Division Association, the Law-White VFW Post 7958 in Hessel and the American Legion Post 323 in Pickford. He was also a member of the Pickford Methodist Church. Howard enjoyed working on various art crafts. He made numerous stone work crafts of lighthouses, birdhouses, butterfly houses and lamps. His copper wire art work of trees, ships, fish and many other items are treasured by the many people he gave them to. He also enjoyed various woodworking and all of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren have a personalized step stool he made for them.

Howard Leach was survived by his wife, Betty Leach; three daughters, Donna Wiggins, DiAnn (David) Firack, and Debra (Richard) Huyck, all of Pickford; six grandchildren, Victoria (Kent) Weiderman, Joel (Brenda) Wiggins, Jason (Dee Dee) Firack, Joshua (Rhonda) Firack, Ben (Elizabeth) Huyck, and Jessica (Charlie) Bjunes; and ten great grandchildren, Dale and Alex Wiggins, Alec, Ian, Teryn, and Elizabeth Firack, Samantha and Isabelle Huyck, and Dylan and Abbey Bjunes.
