John Shepard Allen was the 9th of twelve children born to John Allen and Frances "Fanny" Thompson, who were Quakers and early settlers of Brookville, Indiana.

His siblings: Naomi, Cynthia Ann, Sarah Jane, William Thompson, Rebeckah, Sereptha Ellen, an unnamed boy, Rachel Allen, Indiana, Thomas Jefferson and Frances. In addition to the unnamed boy, three more of his siblings died young: Sereptha, Rachel and Frances.

John's father died in 1841 when he was just 11. It can be assumed that he lived in his childhood home with his mother for some time but he cannot be found in the 1850 census either in Indiana or Washington County, Iowa, which is where he is found in 1854. Though in the 1856 census, he states he had lived in Iowa since 1852.

On January 22, 1854, John married Harriet Squires in Washington County, Iowa. Over the next 11 years they had five children: William V b 1855, Francis b 1857, India B b 1861, Katherine b 1865 and Eliza C b 1866. They lived in Lime Creek township during those years and John worked as a blacksmith until the Civil War.

Military: John enlisted on June 13, 1861 as a Private in Company F, Iowa 1st Cavalry Regiment. Mustered August 1, 1861. Mustered out on September 9, 1864 at Davenport, Iowa, serving his full term.

Back in Washington County after the war, John went back to blacksmithing and he and Harriet had two more children (listed above). It is not known what hardships Harriet endured during John's military service, but she must have died sometime before 1872 because...

On November 10, 1872, John married Cornelia (Nellie) Swan, daughter of Henry and Mary Swan of Ohio. They had three daughters and one son: Jessie b 1874 and Clara b 1880, Edith b 1883, and Clarence b 1890.

In the 1880 census, John and Nellie are found in Eden, Sumner County, Kansas and John's youngest child from his marriage to Harriet, Eliza C, is living with them. At this writing, its is not known what happened to his other children from his years with Harriet.

In a June, 1890 Veteran's Schedule, it shows John survived the war but with the following disabilities: "Pyles, Measles + c".

In the 1900 census, John and Nellie are living with their eldest child Jessie and her husband who are operating a rooming house. John and Nellie's other children, Clara, Edith and Clarence are also present.

John died in 1901 and Nellie continued to live in the Joplin area till her death in 1930.
