Son of John Allen Sr (1757-1837) and Rebecca Shephard (1764-1817), John served as a Lieutenant under Captain Henderson in the War of 1812 [7th Reg. of Ind. Rifles]. Reportedly he followed the family trade of blacksmith and farmer and served 16 years as Justice of the Peace in Brookville, Indiana.

John married Frances Thompson on December 26, 1816 in Philomath Indiana by Esq. Kibby. They had 12 children all born in Franklin County, Indiana, four of whom did not survive to adulthood. The children: Naomi Amy; Cintha Ann; Sarah Jane; William Thompson; Rebeckah; Sereptha Ellen; unnamed son; Rachel Allen; John Shephard; Indianna; Thomas Jefferson; and Frances. Sereptha; the unnamed son; and Frances all died young. Rachel died at age 8.

John owned land that he farmed and that is where he is buried. At the time of his death he reportedly owned about 320 acres. A Quaker by faith, and in that tradition, his grave is unadorned and marked only by river stones.

After John's death, Frances moved to Washington County, Iowa to be near family who lived in the area. Upon her death and at her request, her body was returned to Blooming Grove, Indiana for burial next to her husband.

NOTE: We have given this John Allen the designation of "IV" to differentiate him from his father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is not referred to in records in this manner. Most often he is referred to as "John Allen Jr."
