His paternal grandparents were Daniel Curstead, aka Daniel Custard, (before 19 Jul 1747-16 Mar 1839) and Mary Ward (?-22 Apr 1830). Philip fought in the Mexican-American War under the alias Philip c. Williams. On 15 Jan 1861 Philip married Miretta Dallas in Hamilton County, Ohio, USA. Their daughter is Ethel 'Effie' Morse nee Custeed.
