Maina Faye Eller Tollison, of 901 Fork Shoals Rd., Greenville, S.C., died at her home January 19, 2010. She was the wife of the late Richard I. Tollison.

Born in Trammell, Va. on February 8, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Junie Hansford and Martha Bullis Eller. She was the eighth of nine children and a direct descendant of Peter Eller who migrated from Germany to America in 1610. Her father, Junie, moved the family to West Virginia to find work in the coal mines to support his large family.

Faye left the mountains of her beloved hometown of Montcalm, W.Va. at the age of 18 to join the World War II war effort, in Elkton, Md., where she worked at Triumph Ammunition Company. There she worked making detonation caps for 40 millimeter ammunition shells used on World War II war ships. This was a dangerous job, since many women lost their lives assembling the explosive ammunition. While in Elkton, she met her husband, Richard. He fell in love with her red hair, blue eyes and shinning personality. Soon after their wedding, while her husband was stationed in the Philippines, she moved to Panama City, Fla. to live with his family. She worked at Wainwright Shipyard, and became a first class welder, welding the bows of the World War II Liberty Ships.

When her husband, Richard, returned from the war, they settled in Greenville, S.C. and started their family. Faye became a seamstress making clothing for her family while working at Her Majesty and later retired from Union Carbide. She assisted her husband in starting Universal Plastics, Inc, where she was named Vice President of the company.

Faye was adventurous and enjoyed her time with family and friends. She was an avid water skier although she couldn't swim. She adored her grandchildren and took them with her on numerous journeys, giving them many happy memories and miles of smiles. Faye was a fearless woman and never took anything for granted. Not only was she a champion and defender of the weak, nurturing for the sick and down hearted, but also gave support and encouragement to all. She faced all challenges with strength and determination. Faye welcomed everyone into her home, always offering them something to drink and a piece of her nutty fruitcake.

Surviving are two daughters and son-in-laws, three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, five sister-in-laws, Sara McCullough Tollison, Lillian James Fowler, Doris Nabors Barnett, Alice Reynolds Tollison, and Sylvia Mann Tollison Dubovsky; a niece, Barbara Kenley, of Rocky Gap, Va; and a nephew, L.D. Eller, of Montcalm West Va.; special friend, Edith Moon, as well as, her beloved pets, Sampson, Katie, and Toby.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Garfield Eller, Terrell Eller, Glen Eller, Vaughn Eller, Carl Eller, and Lindsay Paul Eller; and sisters, Montie Eller and Thelma Gay Eller Day. and her beloved pet Murphy.

The family would like to thank Interim Hospice for their compassion and kindness.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, January 23, 2010, at 2:30 p.m. in the mausoleum chapel of Greenville Memorial Gardens with visitation following.

The family will be at the residence.
