Benjamin M. Somer, 87, of Grand Island, Nebraska died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, at St. Francis Medical Center. Dr. Ben was born February 11, 1922, at Walnut, Nebraska to Joseph J. "Joe" and Augusta H. (Block) Somer.

Survivors of the immediate family include his loving wife of 61 years, Phyllis Somer of Grand Island, Nebraska; sons, Douglas Somer and Randall Somer, both of Grand Island, Nebraska; daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Greg Houselog and Lisa and Rod Crumrine, all of Grand Island, Nebraska; brother and sister-in-law, Bernard and Eva Somer of San Jose, California; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Delbert Wilbur of Fremont, Nebraska and a host of friends and relatives.

Ben grew up and received his education in Verdigre, Nebraska, graduating from Verdigre (Nebraska) High School in 1941. He was a talented athlete and was known for competing in high school basketball with Johnny Carson. Ben attended Midland Lutheran, Fremont, Nebraska and Peru (Nebraska) State Colleges. He entered Mid Shipment School in Columbia, New York, where he was commissioned as a Naval officer. He entered the U.S. Navy on July 1, 1942. He served honorably until his discharge on February 26, 1946. He then attended UNL School of Dentistry and graduated in 1950. He married Phyllis J. Bradwell on December 26, 1948, at York, Nebraska during the blizzard of 1948.

They lived in Lincoln and York, Nebraska, before beginning his dentistry practice at Grand Island, Nebraska in 1950. He was known as "Ben Doc" to his patients and friends. He retired in 1994. Ben was a "Big Red Fan" in the truest of sense. He was a Thoroughbred horse race fan, enjoyed spending time at Fonner Park, dancing with his bride, playing cards, bowling, telling jokes and weekends at Johnson Lake, Nebraska with his family, of all things he loved, golfing was close to tops. Ben was on the first Nebraska Honor Flight for World War II veterans to tour the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

He was Past Commander of the VFW, Past President of Lions Club, Past Exhaulted Ruler of Elks, a member of the Platt-Duetsche Society, Riverside Golf Club, and Liederkranz, all of Grand Island, Nebraska.

His parents, an infant son, Ben; sisters, Iola Belak and Irene Schulz preceded him in death.
