The spelling of the Stuart surname is interchangeable with Stewart. It is spelled either way in censuses, however, on his headstone, it is spelled Stuart.

James Stewart married Elizabeth Barnes, the daughter of Richard Barnes and Tabitha Jane Preston, on 23 Jan 1806 in Pulaski Co., Kentucky. They had the following known children: Robert, b. 19 Jan 1807, Delphia, b. 25 Oct 1808, Ann Watson, b. 7 Dec 1809, Elizabeth, b. 15 Feb 1815, Benjamin b. Feb 1817, Lydia b. 22 Feb 1819, Squire, b. abt 1822, Naoma, b. 6 Feb 1824, Nancy Jane b. 1827, and James J. Stewart, b. abt 1831. All children were born in Pulaski Co., Kentucky.
