Celia Cope Richens, age 93, of Myton, passed away Sunday December 20, 2009 at the home of Ken and Barbara Richens from natural causes.
She was born June 5, 1916 in Beaver, the 10th child of Thomas Robert and Fanny Gale Cope. She was brought to the Uintah Basin when she was a year old in 1917, where the family settled on a farm in Arcadia. Her father was a school teacher, which made it necessary for them to move every winter to where his employment was, moving by team and wagon.
She married Aften V. Richens on July 29, 1938. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple January of 1939. They lived on a farm on South Myton Bench where they raised 5 children. She took her family seriously, seeing that they were honest and dependable. Her own motto was: "I would rather die than not be dependable." This took much sacrifice on her part, with a few stumbling blocks in her way.
Celia's life was one of dedication, love, and unselfish service. Her greatest love was her Savior, Jesus Christ. She was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She worked in all organizations, her favorite position being Blazer Boy Leader. She loved teaching boys, and still loves those now grow-up boys.
She worked from 1964 to 1974 in what was then the Roosevelt Hospital as a Medical Records Librarian. She died a good job, but often longed to go back to her favorite place as homemaker. She loved the outdoors, taking great pride in her yard and her beautiful flowers and vegetable gardens.
She served two missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with her husband. The first one was in Tonga Nuku' Alofa Mission from 1979-1981. The second mission was in the Arizona Phoenix Mission from 1986-1987. She and Aften served 3 years as temple workers in the Vernal Temple until he passed away in 2003.
Celia is survived by her five children, Sherril (A. Burnell) Rich of Vernal, Newell (Adelia) Richens, Reed (Katherine) Richens, Ken (Barbara) Richens, and Mary (Joe) Perkins, all of Myton. She has 29 grandchildren and 67 ½ great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, all of her brothers and sisters, an infant son that died at birth, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be Saturday, December 26, 2009, at 11:00 am, at the Myton 2nd Ward Chapel, where a viewing will be held from 9:30-10:45 am.
