The obit notes that Robert was born seven miles north west of Swanwick, Illinois. However, other documents note that he was born in Lakewood, Cuyahoga County, Ohio.

Robert is noted as a member of a prominent Tilden family who died in Sparta Community Hospital. Robert was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Tilden.

On 31 Jan 1900 Robert married Nancy Lorene Edmiston. Robert and Nancy had the following children: William Wesley (d. 10 Jan 1919) and Charles William. Both children precede Robert in death.

Nancy died 12 Jan 1919 in Tilden, Randolph County, IL. In 1920, Robert married former Pearl Gabhart.
