James Henry McKinley, 85, prominent retired Marissa and Tilden Businessman, died at 1:15 o'clock Wednesday morning at his home in this city. In failing health for several years, Mr. McKinley had been seriously ill for the past five weeks ever since he collapsed in the Werner ElectricShop uptown last month.
Mr. McKinley began his career as a farmer east of Tilden and was in business here a number of years. He was a former resident of Tilden and served many years on the High School Board here and the School Board in Tilden. He owned and operated a grain elevator at Tilden and managed the local elevator for 10 years when it was owned by a group of local farmers. He also owned and operated a store in Swanwick for awhile then returned to Marissa to take over the elevator.
Mr. McKinley, active in atheltics, took a keen interest in baseball and basketball and was one of the ardent basketball fans here.
He and his brother, L. R. McKinley, Vice President of the McKinley and Sons Chevrolet Dealers of Belleville, trained horses for exhibition throughout the midwest for a number of years.
Born in Washington County December 18, 1870, he was a son of the late Robert and Sarah McKinley, nee McKee. He married Ella Aitken in Randlph County November 3, 1892.
Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Mary, wife of D. W. Blaylock of Lakewood, Ohio; a grandson, Dan W. Blaylock of Glen Mar Park, Md.; a great-grandson; and two brothers Charles of Tilden and Lemuel R. of Belleville. Two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.
He was a member of Marissa's United Presbyterian Church and Marissa Lodge 881 of the ancient Free and Accepted Masons.
