William Ellis was born at Stafford, Ohio, May 12, 1854 and died at Ida Grove, Iowa February 24, 1927. His father was a soldier in the Civil War and while on a furlough, after a year of service, died leaving his wife and six children. William, the third child was then seven years of age. Eight years later the mother and children moved to Clinton, Illinois.

Mr. Ellis was married December 28, 1876 to Miss Ida Brittin at Waynesville, Illinois. Six years later they came to Iowa and located on the far north of Odebolt. A few years later they moved to their own farm near early where they remain six years. In 1890 they settled up on the home place, a short distance east of Galva where they lived for 18 years after which they came to Ida Grove where they since resided.
Mr. Ellis was an industrious man and enjoyed his work. He took deep interest in public questions and the discussion of them. By thrift and toil, he accumulated 1100 acres of land, 500 acres in Sac county and 600 acres in Ida county consisting of two farms.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Joseph, John, Henry and Charles and two sisters, Mary Ann Denman and Nancy Jane Cunningham.

Mr. Ellis is survived by his wife, a daughter Mrs. Bertha Kessler of Odebolt, two sons Fred and John of Ida Grove and his foster daughter Margaret Woolridge of Silvercreek Township. One sister, Matilda Wilson residing at Webster City survives but was prevented by illness from attending the funeral services.


Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from the home on Court Street and burial took place in the Ida Grove Cemetery.
