On 20 June 1861 he enlisted for military service. Rank at enlistment, 1st Sergeant. His service record says, "Promoted to Full Hospital Steward on 18 Jul 1861. Enlisted in Company I, Ohio 25th Infantry Regiment on 26 Jul 1861. Mustered out on 30 Sep 1861." His wife Nancy applied for a widow's pension 2 May 1863.
An internet record from Denise Bond gives this additional military information: "At the battle of Cheat Mountain he was broken down by the care of the sick and wounded, and three weeks afterward his life was laid on the altar as a sacrifice for his country."
