John Allen
DEXTER- A memorial service will be held Nov 6 for John William Allen of Dexter, who died Oct 20 at age 74. His family chose not to disclose the cause of death.
Allen was born Oct 9, 1925 in Blencoe, Iowa to Hiram and Lena Holt Allen. During WWII, he served in the Navy. Allen was an aircraft mechanic in the South Pacific and received a letter of recommendation.
He married Dorothy Ping in Soldier, Iowa on Mar 7, 1947. In 1953 Allen moved to Eugene. He moved to Dexter in 1963. Allen operated a concrete truck for Wildish Construction Co. for 25 years. He retired in 1984. His interests were hunting, fishing and the outdoors. He enjoyed mechanic work and planting trees in his yard.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Springfield Post, and formerly belonged to the Moose. Allen helped initiate the Dexter Fire Department and EMT program, and served many years as the departments assistant chief and fire chief.
Survivors include his wife; three sons: Dennis of Dexter, OR, Steve of Lebanon, OR, and Russ of Kenai, Alaska; a daughter, Jan Orchard of Newport, OR; four brothers: Lloyd of Kelso, WA, Arthur of Wellman, IA, and Bud and Everett, both of Onawa, IA; three sisters: Amy Pierce of Bellingham, WA, Evelyn Callis of South Sioux City, NE, and Jessie Allen of Turin, IA; Six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A brother, Kenneth, died previously.
Private services will be held at Lane Memorial Gardens in Eugene, OR.
