Margaret Jean Johnson, 83, died Thursday of kidney failure at the Lebanon Rehab Center. She was a resident of Century Field Assisted Living Center.

She was born in Antelope, Mont., to the late William E. Hess and Marguerite Ruth Jackson. She attended Antelope school and graduated in 1944.

In 1945, Margaret married Stanley Milton Johnson, a dairy farmer from Plentywood, Mont. Two years later, they moved to Brownsville, and finally settled in Lebanon, where Stan began his 37-year career at the Lebanon Plywood Mill.

In 1949, Stan and Margaret became charter members of Our Saviors Lutheran Church of Lebanon. Margaret played piano and organ there for more than 40 years. Margaret, a self-taught musician, was asked by rural school districts to teach music to outlying schools. For 16 years, she traveled to Denny, Gore, Oakville, Sand Ridge, Plainview, Jordan, Cottonwood and others. She wrote much of the music that she taught, including many Christmas programs. She published several songs and Christmas operettas. One song, "The Beautiful Willamette Valley," is still used by Eastern Star and other Masonic chapters around the state of Oregon to close their meetings.

Margaret and Stan were members of the Salem chapter of the Sons of Norway for more than 30 years. In 1968, the people of Lebanon honored Margaret by voting her Lebanon's "Woman of the Year."

Margaret is survived by her husband of 64 years, Stanley; son and daughter-in-law Irvin and Sue Johnson of Vancouver, Wash.; son and daughter-in-law Lloyd and Bonnie Johnson of Aurora; son Dean of Crystal River, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law Lyle and Denise Johnson of Gresham; grandchildren Jeff Deetz of Gervais, Amy Deetz of Portland, Erin and Kelsey Johnson of Aurora, and Leslie and Adam Johnson of Gresham; brother William Hess of Lebanon; and sister Dorothy Wolfe of Cornelius.
