Mr. Thornton, Industrialist, Heart Victim
George Thornton, 69 years old, was stricken while taking some groceries from his car at home, 171 Lakeshore avenue, Norton township, and was rushed to Hackley Hospital in the Achterhoff ambulance but was dead upon arrival. Born in London, Ont., May 22, 1881, Mr. Thornton came to Muskegon when a boy and attended Muskegon High School. While there served as an office secretary for Supt. of Schools David McKenzie. Mr. Thornton entered the employment of the former Muskegon Washing Machine Company as an office boy and rose to the position of Secretary and General Manager. Later he was purchasing agent at the Bennett Pumps division and the Agerstrand Corporation prior to retirement in 1945. Mr. Thornton moved to Muskegon Heights in 1901 and was a member of the Muskegon Heights Charter Commission, and served as a secretary of the former Muskegon Heights Board of Trade. Since 1917 he had been living in Norton township. He was married May 13, 1898, in Muskegon to Miss Goldie Downing. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1948. Mr. Thornton was a life member of Muskegon Lodge 274 Elks. He leaves his wife; a son George W. Thornton, Muskegon Heights; two daughters, Mrs. Anton J. Kohlbeck, of Norton Township, and Mrs. Joseph A. Benoit, Royal Oak, and two grandchildren.
