Sarah "Sallie" Johnson Hicks (1856-1944) was the wife of Charles Edward "Ed" Hicks (1853-1932). They had six children: Bessie Aline Farrar (1879-1970), Harold Vernon Hicks (1880-1895), Edward Franklin Hicks (1882-1957), Florine Puffer (1885-1955), Oliver James Hicks (1886-1955) and Eloise Thompson (1898-1986).

Sallie and husband Charles Edward, as well as other Jefferson County Hicks relatives, are buried in the Fayette City Cemetery.

Sallie was from a long line of devout Methodists in southwest Mississippi. Her father, James Clyde Johnson (1832-1923), lived immediately behind the Jefferson Street Methodist Church in Natchez. James Clyde's father, William Baldridge Johnson (1808-1896) and James Clyde's grandfather, John Clem Johnson (1782-1851), were both Methodist ministers in Jefferson County.

She was the eldest of thirteen children. Her siblings were William B. Johnson (1858-1930), Mississippi Johnson (1859-?), Monroe Johnson (1859- ?), Mittle Johnson Bullen (1860-1943), Orborne Johnson (1862-1885), James C. Johnson (1863-1882), Clyde C. The Jefferson County, Mississippi Hicks, Herndon, Stowers and Johnson families' history is included in the book The Story of Grandma Goetz (1859-1942) Natchez, Mississippi, published/revised 2020, written by Edward F. Hicks II. Copies of this book are maintained by family members, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, Jackson, MS and The Historical Natchez Foundation, Natchez, MS.

A diary written by Susan Sillers Darden from 1854-thru 1877 gives a glimpse into the everyday lives of Jefferson County residents and has many references to the Hicks and Johnson families. The original diary is in the Mississippi Department of Archives and History in Jackson, MS.

Obituary, Natchez Democrat, April 9, 1944
Mrs. C.E. Hicks Died Saturday Evening
Member Jefferson County Pioneer Family, Mother of E.F. Hicks of Natchez-----
Mrs. Chas Edw. Hicks of Jefferson County, mother of Mr. Edw. F. Hicks of this city, passed away Saturday evening at the home of her daughter Mrs. W.M. Puffer in Bentonia, Miss. She was in her 88th year.
Mrs. Hicks and her late husband Mr. C.E. Hicks, were one of the oldest of the pioneer families of Jefferson. The family has, throughout the long years of nearly a century, held the respect and esteem of friends and neighbors in all this section of Mississippi.
Mrs. Hicks was a woman of noble character, kind and gentle and a good neighbor. The last years of her life she spent in visits to her children, some of whom live in this section, others in the Mississippi Delta. Tho infirm, she lost none of her characteristic sweetness of disposition in her declining years. To know her was to love her.
Mrs. Charles Edward Hicks was the daughter of the late James Johnson and Olive Davis Johnson. She was the eldest of a large family and is survived by one sister, Mrs. George McDonald of Memphis, also by her five children: Mrs. C.F. Farrar, Jonesville, La., Edw F. Hicks, Natchez, Mrs. W.M. Puffer, Bentonia, Miss, Oliver J. Hicks, McNair, Miss, Mrs. Frazier Thompson, Jackson, 10 grandchildren and 13 great-children. She has 3 grandsons in the service.
Mrs. Hicks was a member of the Methodist Church. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in the family burial ground in Fayette. The time of funeral had not been announced late last night.
